CULTURE

Big city feel with small neighborhood charm

Arts 
  • Kansas City is home to a growing population of local artists that hold events throughout the year 

  • The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art boasts an impressive collection of both ancient and contemporary artworks

  • Kansas City has a diverse range of performing arts venues, with performances ranging from touring Broadway musicals to creations by local playwrights

 

Jazz
  • Credited, along with New Orleans, as the birthplace of jazz music

  • The American Jazz Museum is located in the internationally recognized 18th and Vine District 

 

Barbecue
  • Kansas City barbecue is one of four major ‘styles’ of barbecued meat

  • Many historical barbecue establishments still exist

 

City of Fountains​
  • With over 200 fountains located throughout the City, Kansas City is said to have more fountains than Rome! 

 

National World War I Museum and Memorial 
  • First opened to the public as the Liberty Memorial museum in 1926 after the monument was dedicated by then President Calvin Coolidge

  • Designated in 2004 by the United States Congress as America’s official museum dedicated to honoring and remembering those that served in the Great War

18th and Vine
  • Center of the jazz scene, with many historical jazz clubs still in existence

 

River Market
  • Mixed-use neighborhood exhibiting numerous lofts & eateries, centered around a large marketplace containing shops and a year-round farmer’s market

  • This 150-year-old riverfront neighborhood is situated on the free KC Streetcar route

 

Country-Club Plaza (The Plaza)
  • First-of-its-kind outdoor shopping district famous for its fountains and Spanish architecture

  • The new streetcar expansion will connect the Plaza to the River Market

 

Crossroads District
  • Houses Kansas City’s arts scene and a variety of restaurants and event venues

  • Home to a cornucopia of hundreds of one-of-kind gallery spaces and art studios, many of which are showcased during the city’s monthly First Friday events

 

Downtown
  • The nexus of the city, containing the major entertainment venues, the Power and Light District, and Kansas City’s major employers (including City Hall)

 

Quality Hill
  • Quiet neighborhood with row-style apartments & town homes

Waldo
  • This lively neighborhood sits on the six mile Trolley Track Trail that runs from the Country Club Plaza to 85th & Prospect

 

Westport
  • Culturally diverse mix of residential and retail spaces, featuring a variety of restaurants & entertainment venues

Westside
  • A historically diverse, multicultural area with Latino and Mexican-American influences, the area offers local wares and restaurants
